FLEXIBLE UNIT
To meet the need for student housing in Ghent, HOGent buys a large and old industrial building. In this building, interior design students design individual residential units that are placed in the building without being attached to the existing structure. The available space for each residential unit was limited to an surface of 16m2.
Within this unit with a limited surface, it had to be possible to switch smoothly between the four living scenarios of eating, relaxing, working and sleeping. Flexibility was the starting point of the design. Each section had to be able to function completely independently with its own atmosphere and experience. This means that when one function is in use, all others must be hidden/clossed.
The unit could not be seen as a separate room with walls, doors and windows, but as an object that constantly changes within the specified area of 4m x 4m x 3m.
