THE HOUSE OF ARTS

The House of Arts is the interior design project for a public function with a hybrid character: a combination of 2 (or more) public functions within the same shop or interior. The building for this assignment was a choise between three specified locations. A property located in the city (Ghent), on the outskirts of the city (Ledeberg) and outside the city (Oudenaarde). The location was decisive for the design and concept of the project.

Based on my own interests, I chose to design studio spaces for (young) artists in combination with an exhibition space. These spaces can be rented out to artists who are looking for a studio. The remaining space can be used to exhibit, sell and/or rent out the art of the renters. This ensures that the studio simultaneously becomes the exhibition space, creating an interesting and balanced overlap of both functions. This offers visitors the chance to see the artists at work in their own studio and see the entire process from idea to end result.

Based on this concept, I chose the building in the center of Ghent. A place where there is passage due to its ideal location and therefore perfect for (young) artists who want to create name recognition. I found it very important to create an open and loose atmosphere in my design. A place where people work and live. Where (artistic) freedom is paramount, openness is important and where people learn from and with each other. In my project, each artist can give his own interpretation on how the space will look. This is particularly reflected in the use of materials and the choice of furniture.
